1. Identification: Spondylus americanus (Hermann, 1781), Camocim, Ceará, Brasil, near edge of reef on pocket of debris and coral gravel in 40m depth, live taken specimen shell.

Description: To fully appreciate the south American Spondylus one needs to forget the concept collectors generally have in mind when talking about Florida Sp. americanus, that is rounded and lightweight shells with extremely elongated and flat spines; such shells have nothing in common with their Brazil cousins, which may actually bear the same name, but are a completely different thing; obviously they are very heavy and massive shells growing much slower than the FL shells, and during the growing process they accumulate weight such as not found in any of the caribbean species. Personally I love these much underrated shells and I was happy to accumulate an interesting group of specimens from all populations along the atlantic coast including mid atlantic ridge and offshore islands. Here I present a piece which is particularly attractive for its hot color which can only be described assmoked Alascawill salmon and withterrific thorns and intense tangerine color to the jumbo. Very beautiful piece. Without attachment area, completely free growing on shifting debris. After packing this is going to be a two kilo box. Sorry for the elevated shipping expenses but this shell is worth the little sacrifice.
